Weekend Pursuits

Saturday, the Big School is having a sports competition in honour of the newly renovated Sports Hall.  There will be inter-departmental events like: Tug-of-War, Badminton, Volley Ball, Basketball and Chess.  I shall simply spectate.  The school is usually busy on Saturdays with kids attending extra classes to help them upgrade exam results or just supplement their already crowded curriculum.  Remember, teachers receive bonus payments according to the results of their pupils!!!

The Story of 9 x 9 = 81

Vols Hogmany Party

 Jim, Yann, Maarten

Agnieska, Andie, Mai, Joke, Kay, Ruth.

Lesley, Julie, Kenny and Deborah

And now for something completely different……………………..

The Story of 9×9 = 81days All Mongolians know about ‘nine nines’ and refer to it often.  It begins on the 22nd of December and this is how it works:-

  1. x 9 will freeze homemade vodka.
  2. x 9 will freeze all strong alcoholic drinks.
  3. x 9 will freeze the horns of three year old bulls
  4. x 9 will freeze the horns of four year old bulls
  5. x 9 rice left outdoors will not freeze
  6. x 9 ground will start show through.
  7. x 9 Hummocks and hills will start to show through.
  8. x 9 The sun will warm the air.
  9. x 9 It will be warm.

 11th March, Spring has sprung!

Well, on the subject of weather, we are having highs of -25 and lows of -35 not counting the windchill factor.  Will be counting out those sets of 9 days and giving my 4yr old bull a hot water bottle for his horns.

Festive Fotos

Zulaa in party mode

Cheers!

That lampost was fine yesterday – I blame 4×4’s – they are so bad for the environment!

I shouldn’t have eaten that last mince pie!

Well, hello again.  Party time has ceased for the moment; and boy, do Mongolians love to party, and they can do it without stopping for breath.  Whereas, I need more than a few deep breaths in between events.

These celebrations are such happy times for the local people and since they are so hospitable they insist on sharing their joy with us.

I have lost count of the number of concerts, parties and other celebrations I have attended in the last 10 days.  Several on the same day!! – but the one that will stick in my mind forever is the one at ‘Annahome’.

Happy New Year!

Just trying out this website – seem to have mislaid the last one.  If this blogsite seems OK, I shall write it up properly and regularly.

Thought I’d include a Festive pic, to see how that works out – I am highly suspicious, and will reserve my judgement on this blog ’til later.

Hope you like the picture of the children at ‘Anna Home’ –  I spoke of them in my last entry.  Will be back soon.
